Hooves
Biotin is the most common ingredient in hoof supplements, and research and testing has proven that Biotin improves hoof growth and health. Biotin is a B vitamin, and like all B Vitamins it is water-soluble so it must be taken on a daily basis. Recommended levels of Biotin are between 15mg-20mg/day. It is important to note that Biotin affects the new growth of the hoof, so it takes time to see the positive results. The essential amino acid Methionine has also been linked to the formation of the protein Keratin, which makes up most of the hoof wall. The trace mineral zinc is often deficient in equine diets and is necessary for hoof health. Other nutrients, like fatty acids, Lysine, Vitamin C, Manganese, Selenium play a more indirect role in hoof quality.
Coat
Here is what Dr. Cook has to say about the inclusion of Cod Liver Oil in this quality horse coat supplement formula: "The fish oil is natural cod liver oil from the north Atlantic packed with essential nutrients, particularly vitamins A and Ds. It is a unique constituent special to RC. The BIG asset is that it produces a super shine on a horse's coat which looks great. You can pick out a horse that's been fed with Royal Champion horse coat supplements from the pack". A deficiency in vitamin A, vitamin E, and Biotin, along with the trace minerals Zinc and Copper can be reflected in a poor coat. A deficiency in Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) can result in scaly skin and a dull coat.
Clear and Sharp Eyes
A deficiency of Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) results in irritated eyes that tear and react painfully to light.
Immune System
Studies show that extra amounts of certain nutrients should benefit the immune system. This is especially true of horses under stress. For example, stress can cause the increase utilization of antioxidants like Vitamin C, E, and B Complexes.
Electrolytes
Electrolytes are inorganic mineral salts which when dissolved in water or bodily liquids form electrically positive and negatively charged ions. They are essential to proper body function. Due to electrolyte losses from heaving sweating, horses in competition or under high physical stress, especially in conditions of high heat and humidity, often need electrolyte supplementation. Horses being transported long distances also benefit from electrolyte supplementation as a result of dehydration and electrolyte losses.
